Presets are common example rates — your actual combined state + county + city rate may differ. Check your state revenue department for the current rate at your location.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the item's price before tax.
- Enter your sales tax rate as a percentage, or tap a preset for a common example rate.
- Click Calculate to see the tax amount and the total with tax.
The formula
Tax = price × (rate ÷ 100). Total = price + tax, rounded to the nearest cent.
Worked example
A $100 item at an 8.5% combined rate incurs $8.50 in sales tax, for an out-the-door total of $108.50.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find my actual sales tax rate?
Your combined rate is your state's base rate plus any county, city, and special-district taxes, and it varies by exact address. Check your state department of revenue's rate lookup — many offer a ZIP-code search. The presets here are common examples, not quotes of any jurisdiction's current rate.
Why do two stores in the same state charge different tax?
Because local taxes stack. A state might charge 6% while one city adds 1% and a neighboring county adds 2%, so the same item rings up differently a few miles apart. Online sellers generally collect based on the delivery address.
Is sales tax charged on the pre-discount or post-discount price?
Usually the post-discount price — you pay tax on what you actually pay. Manufacturer coupons can be an exception in some states, where tax applies before the coupon. This calculator applies the rate to the price you enter.
Which states have no sales tax?
Five states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon (Alaska allows local sales taxes, though). If you live in one of these, your rate is typically 0% unless local taxes apply.
